If you're building out your affiliate program portfolio, CJ Affiliate and ShareASale are two of the first networks you'll encounter. Both are massive. Both have been around for decades. But they're not the same — and for maker/DIY content specifically, one tends to be more useful than the other.
CJ Affiliate (Commission Junction)
CJ is one of the oldest and largest affiliate networks. It has deep relationships with major retail brands — big box stores, electronics retailers, national chains. If you're recommending mainstream tools and gear that sell at large retailers, CJ probably has an affiliate program for the brand.
The interface is more complex than most, and the approval process for individual programs can be strict. Some programs require a review of your site before approving. But once you're in, the reporting is solid and payments are reliable.
Best for: Mainstream brands, electronics, home improvement, photography gear
ShareASale
ShareASale has a much wider variety of niche and specialty programs — smaller retailers, craft supply stores, specialty tool brands. The interface is friendlier, approvals tend to be faster, and there are programs you won't find anywhere else.
Payment terms are standardized (net 30, $50 minimum payout), which makes planning easier. The reporting is basic compared to CJ, but for most creators that's fine.
Best for: Niche brands, specialty tools, outdoor gear, crafts, maker-specific retailers
Which one first?
If you're just starting out, start with ShareASale. The barrier to entry is lower, the program variety is better for niche content, and you're more likely to get approved for programs quickly.
Add CJ once you have an established site or channel — the bigger brands on CJ often require proof of traffic before approving.
You can browse both networks (and more) in the MakerManifest Affiliate Directory before applying anywhere.
